My uncle was ambushed by Waffen SS on the 5thSeptember 1944 whilst driving his Royal Army Service Corps Lorry I in Hoogstraten .his name was Alfred Henry Grover and he hid his co- driver in a ditch whilst holding off the Waffen SS members with rifle fire .Eventuallymout of ammunition he was captured by the SS and taken away from the scene and was found dead the next day by Allied troops coming along the road who also found the other driver in the ditch covered in leaves ,injured but still alive .My uncle was buried at the roadside with a wooden cross of Lorraine on his grave with his name and number on it .it remained there until the Commonwealth war graves commission relocated his body from there to Lille Southern cemetery with a war grave with a stone headstone where it is to this day

Je fais des recherches sur Alfred Henri GROVER. Il est né à Embrook, Wokingham, dans le Berkshire au Royaume Uni. Il était le fils de Henri and Victoria Jeannette GROVER. Il était soldat- conducteur dans la Royal Army Service Corps (T/1450912). Il a été tué à Santes le 5/6 septembre 1944. Il avait 21 ans et il est inhumé à Lille.

I am searching for Alfred Henri GROVER. He was born in Embrook, Wokingham, Henri and Victoria Jeannette GROVER’s son. He was a soldier–driver (Royal Army Service Corps) (T/1450912). He was killed in Santes (North France) on 5/6th September 1944. He was 21 years old. He is buried in Lille.
